Abstract

5G began with 3GPP Release 15, establishing 5G NSA deployments using 4G LTE infrastructure. Releases 16 and 17 introduced enhancements like Industrial IoT, time-sensitive communication, expanded ecosystems, enhanced MIMO, small data transmission, and energy-saving features. Release 18 marks the start of the 5G-Advanced era, bringing Reduced Capability devices (5G Redcap), Satellite Integration (5G NTN), and Cellular to Vehicle connectivity (5G V2X). 5G-Advanced enhances network latency, mobility, and reliability, while incorporating AI and ML to boost performance. It supports advanced use cases across sectors. We explore the system specifications that define 5G-Advanced and highlight an example use case in the Manufacturing sector.
